It was Wojciech “Voytek” Frykowski for whom twenty-five-year-old Abigail Folger was at 10050 Cielo Drive. He was an acquaintance of the famous filmmaker Roman Polanski back in Poland. Abigail Folger was already a pretty popular persona in the Hollywood circle, but Frykowski did have a lot of contributions in her life behind this success. Abigail Folger was the daughter of Peter Folger who was the chairman of the Folger Coffee Company.
Abigail Folger, the prominent heiress of the Folger Coffee Company was brutally murdered by the Charles Manson cult. This was enough big news to fill the front pages for weeks on its own.
Abigail Folger was born on 11th August 1943 and died just two days before her 26th birthday. She was born in a wealthy catholic family and raised with tradition and high-society training. She was a debutante and a model student who graduated from Harvard University with an art history degree. After completing her degree she started working for the University of California Art Museum in Berkeley. Later she moved to New York and started working for a bookstore and then as a social worker in the ghettos.
In 1968 Abigail Folger came across Voytek Frykowski in New York who was new to America back then. Frykowski claimed to be an aspiring writer. The two communicated mostly in French as Frykowski was not very fluent in English.
Abigail Folger and Frykowski drove from New York to Los Angeles that August and rented a house in the Hollywood hills. Folger started volunteering as a social worker in some of the roughest neighborhoods of LA.
The two did not have a very happy relationship and their turmoil stemmed from Frykowski’s abuse of Abigail Folger’s money. The Manson Family prosecutor Vincent Bugliosi “Had no means of support and lived off Folger’s fortune.” It also might have come from their drug abuse. Frykowski regularly used cocaine, marijuana, LSD, and mescaline. Abigail Folger was reportedly high when she talked to her mother on the phone for the last time.
Abigail Folger’s therapist thought she was ready to leave Frykowski as of her final appointment that summer. But she would never get the chance.
On 8th August 1969, Sharon Tate was home for three weeks after visiting her husband Roman Polanski. He was preparing to direct a film in London back then. Tate was eight and a half months pregnant and asked Frykowski and Abigail Folger to be with her until Polanski returned home.
At around 10 p.m. Abigail Folger called her mother in Connecticut to let her know that she booked a flight to San Francisco the next morning. Shortly after Folger put on her nightgown and started to read in one of the guest rooms and Frykowski fell asleep on the couch.
When he woke up he saw a strange man pointing a gun into his face. When he asked who the man was, the stranger replied: “I am the Devil and I’m here to do the Devil’s business.”
The next morning, the housekeeper of Polanski came running from 10050 Cielo Drive. She was screaming while uttering “Murder! Death! Bodies! Blood!”. She was constantly pounding on neighbors’ doors and calling them out.
By the time policemen arrived, they found the Hollywood home to be a human slaughterhouse. The caretaker of the property, Steven Parent was slumped over in the front seat of his car at the property entrance, shot four times. Policemen were even more shocked to see the word “pig” written with blood on the front door. Sharon Tate was stabbed 16 times. A rope was tied around her neck, slung over a rafter, and the other end of the same rope was attached to Jay Sebring’s neck who was a friend of Tate’s. Tate was wearing her night pajamas.
Police found Sebring beaten over the head and stabbed. Abigail Folger was lying out on the Lawn. It was clear that she tried to flee when she was cut down. Her nightgown was soaked in blood and it was nearly impossible to tell the now-crimson garment had originally been white. She was stabbed 28 times that night.
Frykowski was found on the lawn with numerous head wounds. He was shot twice and stabbed 51 times.
The Manson Family killed another couple Leno and Rosemary LaBianca, the very night after murdering Abigail Folger. They were finally arrested in October 1969 when police raided the Manson family’s ranch in Death Valley. Several of its members were arrested for auto theft and possession of stolen properties.
Susan Atkins was one of the culprits who bragged to one of her cellmates about murdering Sharon Tate while imprisoned. She described how Abigail Folger looked at her and smiled and she looked at her and smiled right before Watson stabbed her in the stomach. The cellmate recalled that there was not a shred of sympathy on Atkin’s part for the victims.
